Thomas Hambach (* 19th January 1962 in Fuerstenfeldbruck ) is a Brigadier General of the Air Force of the Armed Forces . Hambach has been the commander of the Bavarian State Command since October 1, 2019 .

Military career

Training and first uses

After graduating from high school, Hambach joined the Bundeswehr in Roth in 1981 . He studied electrical engineering at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich ( graduate engineer ). He was then trained and deployed as a Tornado ECR escort officer in Jagdbombergeschwader 32 in Lechfeld and Jagdbombergeschwader 38 "Friesland" in Schortens . In 1993 he became head of the squadron (electronics squadron ) in the Fighter Bomber Wing 34 "Allgäu" in Memmingen. From 1995 to 1997 he took part in the general staff course (L) at the command academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg . He later attended the 1st Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC) at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) in Bracknell ( Great Britain ).

Service as a staff officer

In 1998 Hambach was transferred to the headquarters of the armed forces (Fü S III 1  Military Policy and Arms Control ) in Bonn. In 2000 he became commander of the technical group in Reconnaissance Wing 51 "Immelmann" in Jagel. Subsequently, he was a consultant in the military policy and arms control department in the BMVg, Fü S III 1 (initially responsible for Russia and GU countries, later Asia ). In 2005 he became an adjutant to the General Inspector of the Bundeswehr, General Wolfgang Schneiderhan . After working as Head of Division Fü S III 3 or Pol I 3 Representing Germany's interests in military policy in NATO , in 2013 he became the commander of Weapons System Support Center 1 in Erding.

Service as a general

From 2014 to 2017, Hambach was Director of Teaching at the Management Academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg. On this post, Hambach was also promoted to Brigadier General. On July 1, 2017, he became the successor of Brigadier General Stefan Lüth , Deputy Commander of the Bundeswehr Logistics Command in Erfurt, from where he was appointed Commander of the Bavarian Command on October 1, 2019 .

Private

Hambach is married and has three children. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Clausewitz Society .
