The Jagdbombergeschwader 38 "Friesland" (JaboG 38 "F") is a former squadron of the Luftwaffe and was stationed at Jever Air Base .

history

The JaboG 38 "F" emerged on August 26, 1983 from the Luftwaffe 10 weapons school , which had been stationed at Upjever Air Base since 1964. First a squadron was set up and equipped with a Panavia Tornado . Their task was to carry out the weapons training of the pilots and weapons system officers (WSO) who had been trained on tornado at the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment in Cottesmore, England . On April 26, 1988, the squadron was given the addition "Friesland".

In 1989 a second squadron was set up, which was equipped with the first Tornado ECR . These machines remained in the squadron until 1995, when the ECR version was exchanged for the IDS version of the 32 fighter-bomber squadron in Lechfeld. On February 24, 1999 the trinational tornado training in Cottesmore was discontinued. Since then, the Air Force has been re-training pilots and WSO for the tornado at Holloman AFB in New Mexico / USA, which made a Europeanization course necessary. From this point on, this was carried out by JaboG 38 “F”.

On July 1, 1999, the squadron was reorganized, the 2nd squadron dissolved and instead a tactical course was introduced. On August 31, 2005, the squadron was disbanded. The Europeanization of the aircraft crews has since been carried out independently by the remaining squadrons. As such, Jever Air Base was closed at the end of September 2013.

Trivia

From September 1997 to March 1999, astronaut Thomas Reiter was the commander of the flying group of JaboG 38.
