The Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 37 (FlaRakG 37) was an association of the Luftwaffe . The last location was the Hinrich-Wilhelm-Kopf barracks in Cuxhaven-Altenwalde . The squadron was equipped with the HAWK anti-aircraft missile system when it was decommissioned . The association was subordinate to NATO.
On December 31, 1992 the anti-aircraft missile squadron 37 was disbanded.
task
After the conversion to the HAWK weapon system , the association, together with other air defense associations, took over the security of the rear airspace of the Federal Republic of Germany. The HAWK associations should protect the assigned rooms against the threat of aircraft and ballistic missiles . In the event of a defense, the mobile HAWK units should avoid attack by enemy troops by repeatedly relocating their locations.
history
The anti-aircraft missile squadron 37 was founded on July 15, 1957 as Luftwaffe anti-aircraft battalion 44 from the trunk of the anti-tank gun battalion 3 in Rendsburg . The installation took place in Hamburg-Osdarf . By March 1964, the association was equipped with radar-controlled anti-aircraft guns of the type L / 70 in caliber 40 mm from the manufacturer Bofors .
In September 1959 the association was moved to Aurich .
From February 1965 the conversion to the anti-aircraft missile system HAWK took place . In this course the association was reclassified to the anti-aircraft missile battalion 37. At the same time, a stick battery and a medical battery were provided to the battalion. The crews of the four combat batteries were trained until May 1965 in the Tactical Training Center for Air Defense Missiles (TaktAusbWbZ FlaRakLw USA) in Fort Bliss .
A supply battery was incorporated on November 1, 1967.
Beginning in March 1967, the association was relocated to its last location in Cuxhaven-Altenwalde . The 4th battery was the first sub-unit to move into the location. The rest of the troops, with the exception of the 2nd battery, gradually moved into the Hinrich-Wilhelm-Kopf barracks until April 1974 . The second battery remained in Bremervörde until the association was dissolved and occupied the position in Nindorf near Lamstedt .
Between autumn 1978 and spring 1979 the weapon system was converted to the Improved HAWK version . Further increases in combat value followed in order to adapt to the changing threat situation.
When the air force units were reorganized, the name was changed to Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 37 on October 1, 1989. The unit retained this name until it was dissolved. The squadron was subordinated to anti-aircraft missile command 1 (FlaRakKdo1).
In the course of the political changes caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War from the end of 1989, the importance of air defense decreased. In addition, the HAWK mobile weapon system and the Nike stationary weapon system were already being replaced by the more powerful Patriot weapon system. From October 1, 1992, the four combat squadrons were transferred to the sister associations Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 31 (takeover of 3rd and 4th squadrons as 1st and 2nd squadrons) and Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 39 ( takeover of 1st and 2nd squadrons as 5th and 6th squadrons) . Relay). On December 31, 1992 the remnants of the association were dissolved.
