history

The history of operational command area 1 goes back to 1962. Over 40 years ago, as the highest region on the Swabian Alb, Meßstetten was a particularly favorable location for the construction of a radar station from a geographical point of view. The Luftwaffe operated a radar station and a command post with the callsign "Sweet Apple" in Meßstetten since 1963. This was a fixed pillar in the performance of air sovereign tasks across Germany. From the previous radar command service, the operational command service, a highly modern service provider for the management and networking of all air warfare, has emerged. Operations management area 1 was the largest association at the Meßstetten location and was also responsible for supplying all of the departments stationed here. In accordance with the concept for the stationing of the Bundeswehr in Germany 2011 by the Federal Minister of Defense of October 26, 2011, the operation of the CRC was discontinued on October 1, 2013 and operational area 1 itself was officially dissolved with effect from December 31, 2013. The radar sub-unit of the staff / support company 12 was integrated into operational command area 2 as a separate technical train (AbgTZg) 249. The AbgTZg of operational management area 1 were also divided between operational command areas 2 and 3.
