Thomas Jonathan Jackson Altizer

Thomas Jonathan Jackson Altizer (born September 28, 1927 in Charleston , West Virginia , † November 28, 2018 in Stroudsburg , Pennsylvania ) was an American religious scholar .

Life

Altizer attended St. John's College in Annapolis , Maryland . Altizer studied Christian theology at the University of Chicago . After graduating, Altizer got a job as a teacher at Wabash College in Crawfordsville , Indiana in 1954 , where he taught until 1956.

He then worked as a professor of religion at Emory University . During his time at Emory University, he wrote several books and published articles in various newspapers and magazines. In particular, his theological article Is God dead? from 1965 and 1966 in Time found national prominence in the United States. In the mid-1960s, this led to media discussions with Christian theologians such as Gabriel Vahanian , William Hamilton and Paul van Buren, as well as with Rabbi Richard Rubenstein on the subject of God-is-dead theology . There were also theological discussions with the Lutheran theologian John Warwick Montgomery and the theologian Walter Martin . Altizer later moved to the State University of New York at Stony Brook as a professor of religion . Altizer lived in Mount Pocono , Pennsylvania until his death in November 2018 .
