Thomas Erhard Paul Jugel (born November 28, 1957 in Nuremberg ) is a rear admiral in the German Navy, out of service . His last position was in the planning department of the Federal Ministry of Defense .

Military career

Training and first uses

Thomas Jugel joined the German Navy in 1977 . As an officer candidate for Crew VII / 77 , he began his training as a naval officer . From 1978 to 1982 he studied civil engineering at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . This was followed by training and deployment as officer on watch and commander in the area of ​​the flotilla of the mine forces . Jugel served as a watch officer from 1983 to 1985 in the 1st minesweeping squadron in Flensburg . In 1985 he was a ship operations officer on the Saar tender . From 1985 to 1987 he was employed as commander of the Pluto minesweeper with the 5th Minesweeper Squadron in Olpenitz . From 1988 to 1990 he took over the mine-hunting boat Cuxhaven in the same function in the 4th minesweeping squadron in Wilhelmshaven . Afterwards he served until 1992 as department head of naval command services in the staff of the flotilla of the mine forces in Wilhelmshaven. From 1992 to 1994 he took part in the 34th admiralty staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg.

Service as a staff officer

From 1994 to 1996 Jugel was a consultant for "Operative Principles" in the naval command staff (Fü M III 2) in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . From 1996 to 1997 he was employed as a deputy commander of the 5th minesweeping squadron in Olpenitz. From 1997 to 1998 he was head of the “Training” department in the Mining Forces flotilla (A3A), also in Olpenitz. In the next function, he worked from 1998 to 2000 as commander of the 1st minesweeping squadron in Olpenitz. This was followed by assignments as a speaker “Conception of the Federal Armed Forces” in the Federal Ministry of Defense Command Staff of the Armed Forces (Fü S VI 2) in Bonn (2000–2003) and as commander of the training group for the Naval Operations School in Bremerhaven (2003–2004). From 2004 to 2006 he was head of the “Training, Exercises and Evaluation” department at the joint armed forces NATO headquarters (J7), Lisbon / Portugal. This was followed by a position as head of the "Operations Management of the Federal Armed Forces" division in the command staff of the armed forces (Fü SV 3) in Bonn (2007–2008). In 2008, he moved to the BMVg in Berlin as head of the “Maritime Operations” and “UN / EU Operations” division at the operations command team (ET MAROPS, ET VN / EU). From 2009 to 2010 he attended courses at the Center des Hautes Etudes Militaires (CHEM) and at the Institut des Hautes Etudes de Défense Nationale (IHEDN) in Paris / France.

Service as an admiral

From 2010–2013 he was in command of the Mission Flotilla 1 and as director of the “ Center of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters ” in Kiel. In 2011 he was in action with the frigate Bavaria (F 217) and from August 13, 2011 to December 5, 2011 he was Force Commander of the European Union Naval Force - Somalia (Operation Atalanta) in the Horn of Africa.

In 2013 he moved to the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin as deputy head of the Strategy and Operations department . From May 1, 2015 to June 30, 2019, he was the head of the Bundeswehr Planning Office . Most recently, he was employed in the planning department of the BMVg. Jugel retired on December 1, 2019 after 42 years of service.
