Thomas Meyer (* 1943 in Leipzig ) is professor emeritus for political science at the Technical University of Dortmund (focus: democratic theory, political theory, Europe).

Life

Thomas Meyer studied philosophy, political science, psychology and German literature at the University of Frankfurt (among others with Adorno, Horkheimer, Habermas, Apel and Fetscher). In 1973 he received his doctorate there on the subject of the conflict in Marx's theory of emancipation: Study on the role of the proletarian subject . His habilitation took place in 1977 at the Free University of Berlin .

Meyer is a well-known critic of the influence of modern media on the style and content of today's politics. He is the deputy chairman of the Fundamental Values ​​Commission of the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany . He is co-editor and since 2008 also editor-in-chief of the political-cultural magazine Neue Gesellschaft / Frankfurter Hefte . He is also a lecturer at the Academy for Social Democracy of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation . His academic focus is on social democracy , the cultural foundations of politics, political communication as well as civil society and politics.
