Thomas Poguntke

Thomas Poguntke (* 1959 in Stuttgart ) is a German political scientist and university professor . From 2007 to 2010 he held the Chair of Political Science / Political System in Germany at the Social Science Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum and since 2011 Director of the Institute for German and European Party Law and Party Research at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

biography

Thomas Poguntke attended the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Esslingen and graduated from high school in 1979 . In the 1980s he was a freelancer and photographer for the Esslinger Zeitung .

He studied history and political science at the University of Stuttgart and at the London School of Economics , where he obtained his master's degree in 1983 . This was followed by a doctoral degree at the European University in Florence ( Italy ), where he submitted his dissertation in 1989 ( An Alternative Politics? The German Green Party in a Comparative Context ). Then Poguntke was employed at the University of Mannheim . There, in 1999, he completed his habilitation with a thesis on stability and change. The development of the organizational connections between parties and citizens in Western Europe (1960–1989) .

In 1999 he was offered a professorship at Keele University ( Staffordshire ) in Great Britain , where he was Professor of Political Science until 2005 . In 2005/2006 Poguntke then moved to the University of Birmingham as Director of the "Institute for German Studies" and "Professor for German and European Politics" . In October 2006 he accepted the offer of a W3 professorship for political science at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

His research interests include political parties and party systems as well as the comparative analysis of modern democracies.
