Atonement stone for Thomas Rode

Thomas Rode (* in Pomerania ; † January 14, 1487 in Rostock ) was a Roman Catholic Mecklenburg clergyman, canon and provost.

Life

Thomas Rode enrolled at the University of Rostock in 1453 . Perhaps, as Krause suspects, he is identical to Thomas Rode, who played a role at the Marienkirche in Stettin as early as 1444 in the dispute over the spiritual fief of the Roden Chapel . After completing his studies, he was initially secretary to the Dukes of Mecklenburg from 1462 to 1467 . In 1477 he was the ambassador of the Dukes of Mecklenburg in Rome . In 1481 Thomas Rode is recorded as canon in the cathedral chapter of Schwerin Cathedral and in 1482 as chancellor of the dukes of Mecklenburg. At that time he was the owner of the rectorate at the Marienkirche in Rostock. In the course of the developing Rostock cathedral feud , Thomas Rode became the first provost of the Rostock collegiate monastery set up by the dukes in agreement with the council of the city of Rostock at the Jakobikirche against the resistance of university circles, probably also Franciscans and Rostock citizens . He was slain on January 14th, 1487 by the angry crowd of the citizens of the city in front of the Burse to half moon . The cathedral feud dragged on until 1491 and the Mecklenburg dukes received a considerable amount of atonement from the Rostock citizens for the murder of Thomas Rode in 1491.

After Thomas Rode's death in 1494, an atonement cross was placed at the scene of the act ; it is still preserved today, but is now in the monastery of the Holy Cross . His sister, who was married to Volmer Poggendorp, donated as a widow to the monastery Neuenkamp in memory of him and for his salvation a Memorie .
