Thomas Sargent
Thomas John Sargent (born July 19, 1943 in Pasadena , California ) is an American economist . In 2011 he was awarded the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics . He received the award together with Christopher Sims for his research in the field of macroeconomics .
Life
Sargent graduated from the University of California, Berkeley . After graduating from Harvard University , he was First Lieutenant and Captain in the US Army . This was followed by teaching activities at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota , from 1975 as a professor, and at Stanford University . Since 2002 he has been Berkley Professor of Economics and Business at New York University .
Since 1987 he has also been a Senior Fellow of the conservative Hoover Institution at Stanford University .
In 2007, Sargent served as president-elect of the American Economic Association .
Act
As a co-founder of the New Classical Macroeconomics alongside Robert E. Lucas , he made significant contributions to the theory of rational expectations . His thesis of policy ineffectiveness , developed with Neil Wallace , states that a systematic and therefore predictable monetary policy has no real impact on the economy.
Honors
In addition to the prize in memory of Alfred Nobel, Sargent has received the following science prizes, among others: Nemmers Prize for Economics (1996), NAS Award for Scientific Reviewing (2011). In 1983 he became a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences , and in 2011 the British Academy .
