Thomas Schilp

Thomas Schilp (* 1953 in Friedberg (Hessen) ; † September 28, 2019 ) was a German historian and archivist .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1972, Schilp studied history, German studies, politics and philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1972 to 1981 . 1977/1978 he passed the first state examination; In 1981 he received his doctorate from Walter Heinemeyer with a thesis on the Reichsburg Friedberg in the Middle Ages. From 1981 to 1983 a traineeship at the archive school in Marburg followed . In 1984/1985 he was a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen , and from 1985 to 1987 research archivist at the main state archive in Düsseldorf . From 1987 onwards, Schilp worked for the Dortmund City Archives , and from 2011 until he retired in 2014, it was director of the archive. In 2001 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

Due to a habilitation thesis on religious women's communities in the early Middle Ages, he received the venia legendi for medieval history at the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg in 1994 . In 1999 he was appointed adjunct professor, and in 2015 he was re-qualified at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Schilps research focused on the Memoria of the Middle Ages, the city's history and the history of religious communities of women.

Schilp was co-editor of several scientific series: Dortmund medieval research, Dortmund excursions on history and culture, Essen research on the women's foundation , Westphalia in the pre-modern era, memoria and remembrance practices. He died on September 28, 2019 at the age of 65.
