Thomas Schwarz (born November 20, 1957 in Bonn ) is a German journalist and publicist.

Life

Between 1979 and 1999, Schwarz was a radio editor and presenter . Among other things, he worked as a parliamentary correspondent for Radio Luxemburg (German program) - where Schwarz had previously completed his editorial traineeship - and Deutsche Welle in Bonn. From the mid-1980s, Schwarz worked in Berlin for RIAS Berlin and Radio Hundert, 6 . At “Hundert, 6” he was responsible for the program as editor-in-chief for a few months. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, from August 1990, Schwarz worked again for “Hundert, 6” as a special correspondent for “German Unification Process” in Berlin. Between 1994 and 1999, Schwarz was editor-in-chief of Radio Bonn / Rhein-Sieg .

After his radio days, Schwarz initially worked as a freelance media and communications consultant in Bonn until he became a member of the management team at BMC Software GmbH, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, in 2002 . Until 2004 he was responsible for the areas of marketing / communication and business development as director. During this time, Schwarz also worked as a lecturer at the Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in St. Augustin, Rhineland, in the field of "technical journalism".

Between 2005 and 2014, Schwarz was initially responsible as press spokesman and media director for external communications at CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg eV as head of the staff unit. He later took over the international communication department, where he was also entrusted with the aid organization's CSR cooperation. He also worked on international missions for Aktion Deutschland Hilft , Islamic Relief and World Vision . Schwarz also worked internationally for the cross-organizational association “ Together for Africa ”; among others with Anne Will in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo . His numerous trips to disaster and poverty areas, especially in Africa and Asia, took Schwarz several times to Kenya , Pakistan , Bangladesh , India , Chad , Darfur ( Sudan ), Lesotho and other countries. In 2006, Schwarz stayed in Lebanon for several weeks during the war there .

In 2009, Schwarz wrote about the conflict in Pakistan for the foreign policy journal “ Internationale Politik ”. At the beginning of the refugee movement due to the Syrian civil war , Schwarz spent several weeks in Jordan and Lebanon in 2011 and 2012 . As early as 2012, he forecast a “refugee disaster” in the event that the funds from the rich countries were not made available to Jordan and Lebanon in sufficient quantities to enable the refugees living there to lead a decent life.

In addition to German publications, Schwarz has published numerous English articles and blogs, including for CARE USA, CARE Australia and CARE UK, as well as giving interviews in numerous countries, including for Al Jazeera . In recent years, Schwarz has also been a regular guest at universities to give lectures on development cooperation. Schwarz was invited by the district of Ahrweiler (Rhineland-Palatinate) as the main speaker at the military cemetery in Bad Bodendorf to a much-noticed speech on the occasion of the 2018 national mourning day. In it he warned against a new nationalism and postulated that only a peace that goes hand in hand with freedom is just. The event took place on behalf of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Earlier guest speakers included the SPD politician Annemarie Renger , the CDU politician Norbert Blüm and the Cap Anamur founder Rupert Neudeck .

Thomas Schwarz is the son of the politician Heinz Schwarz and brother of Stefan Schwarz .
