Thomas Sergeant Hall

Thomas Sergeant Hall (born December 23, 1858 in Geelong , † December 21, 1915 in Camberwell (Victoria) , Boroondara City , Australia) was an Australian geologist, paleontologist and zoologist.

Life

Hall studied at the University of Melbourne with a bachelor's degree in natural sciences in 1886. Among other things, he studied paleontology under Frederick McCoy . He then worked briefly as a teacher before continuing his studies in biology with Walter Baldwin Spencer . From 1890 to 1893 he was director of the Mining School in Castlemaine (Victoria) before becoming a lecturer in zoology at the University of Melbourne, which he remained until his death from nephritis.

He wrote a popular science book on the geology of the Melbourne area (Victorian Hill and Dale, 1909) and received the Murchison Fund of the Geological Society of London in 1901 for his work on graptolites in Victoria, Australia . They helped clarify the stratigraphy of the Ordovician in Victoria. He also studied fossils and stratigraphy of the Tertiary in Victoria in collaboration with his friend George Baxter Pritchard (1869-1956).

In 1900 he first described the genus Psilichthys of the Birgeriidae . He also demonstrated the Darriwilium stage of the ordovician.

He had been married since 1891 and had three sons and a daughter. In 1908 he received an honorary doctorate (D.Sc.) in Melbourne. From 1890 he was a member of the Royal Society of Victoria.
