Thomas Taranu (born August 15, 1987 ) is a German gymnast of Romanian descent.

Thomas Taranu is a sports soldier and lives in Niefern . He starts for KTV Straubenhardt and is trained by Alexej Griegoriev. His special devices are the rings and the all-around. Taranu was already successful as a junior. At the European Youth Championships in 2004, he won the silver medal with the team and missed an individual medal in fourth place on the rings. On the floor, the rings and the horizontal bar , he became German Junior Champion, in 2005 on the horizontal bar and the rings.

Since 2006 Taranu has started in the male performance category. He had his first successful international appearance at the World Cup in Gent , where he finished eleventh on the rings. In 2009 he took part in the World Championships in London for the first time, where he was 228th in the all-around event and 52nd in the rings. In 2010 he won the team bronze medal behind the teams from China and Japan in the German team in Rotterdam at the World Championships with Philipp Boy , Fabian Hambüchen , Sebastian Krimmer , Eugen Spiridonov and Matthias Fahrig . The best individual result was a 12th place on the rings. The seventh place on the rings was also the best result at the European Championships in 2011 in Berlin , in the all- around event Taranu was ranked 127th. The 2011 World Championships in Tokyo brought the team a sixth place, in the individual all-around event he reached 247th place, best The individual result was 22nd place on the rings.

Nationally, Taranu won his first medal at the German Championships in 2006 on the pommel horse with bronze. In 2009 he was third on the rings, in 2010 in the all-around and on the ground. He also won his first national title on the rings. In 2011 he was runner-up on the rings and in the jump as well as a third place on the ground. In 2012 he was runner-up on the ground and third on the rings. In the first Olympic qualification Taranu was in third place, in the decisive second competitions he fell back to sixth place and thus missed out on the Olympic qualification by one place. He is a substitute for the Olympic Games in London, but has not been officially nominated by the German Olympic Sports Confederation .
