Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath
Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath KG (born January 25, 1765 , † March 27, 1837 in London ) was a British nobleman and politician.
Origin and youth
Thomas Thynne was the eldest son of Thomas Thynne, 3rd Viscount Weymouth and Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck, daughter of William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland . He attended Winchester College from 1773 and studied at St John's College in Cambridge in 1785 , where he graduated as a master's in 1787 .
Life
In the general election on April 22, 1786, he was elected MP for Weobley in Hertfordshire , which was completely politically controlled by his family. As Tory , he supported the Pitt government and was re-elected as member of Weobley in 1790, but accepted the mandate there after the withdrawal of John Sebright , the previous candidate from Bath . In the House of Commons he remained an inconspicuous member of parliament until, after the death of his father, who had been made Marquess of Bath in 1789 , inherited the latter's title on November 19, 1796, he became a member of the House of Lords and left the House of Commons . He rarely attended the meetings of the House of Lords, but supported the governments in each case. In May 1804 he turned down the office of Chamberlain of the Royal Household on the grounds that his two younger brothers George and John already held high court offices. From 1819 he served as Lord Lieutenant of Somerset . On July 16, 1823 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter.
Marriage and offspring
On April 24, 1794 he married Isabella Elizabeth Byng in London, a daughter and co-heir of George Byng, 4th Viscount Torrington and Lucy Boyle. He had eight sons and three daughters with her, including:
- Lady Elizabeth Thynne (1795–1866) ⚭ John Campbell, 2nd Baron Cawdor
