Thomas Wunderlich (captain)

Thomas Wunderlich (* 1979 in Lübben ) is the captain of the Polarstern . He will lead the ship during the MOSAiC expedition to the Arctic in 2020.

Life

Wunderlich was born in Lübben, grew up in Cottbus and has lived in Burg since 2009 . Wunderlich completed his school days with the Abitur at the Lausitzer Sportschule Cottbus . He then studied nautical science for four and a half years at the Wismar University of Applied Sciences in the nautical and seafaring department in Warnemünde . After graduating, Wunderlich became a third officer on a container ship.

In 2004 he moved to Polarstern as 3rd Officer , where he was promoted to 2nd Officer. In 2005 he moved to the research vessel Meteor , where he worked until 2012. Alternating on the Polarstern and the Meteor , he was promoted to chief officer. He has been the captain of Polarstern since 2010 . Employed he is with the shipping company F. Laeisz that the Polarstern bereedert .

On the Polarstern , Wunderlich takes turns as captain with Stefan Schwarze . Everyone has about half a year on the ship and half a year on land. The change usually takes place every three months, sometimes after six months. The missions alternate between the Arctic and Antarctic .

From September 20, 2019 to June 6, 2020, Schwarze led the Polarstern on the MOSAiC expedition. Due to the corona crisis , that was longer than planned. Finally, the change of the crew and the captain early June 2020 was in a fjord of Spitsbergen take place. Now Wunderlich took over the Polarstern as captain. It is planned that he will lead the ship until it returns in October 2020.

Wunderlich is actively involved in the voluntary fire brigade .
