Stefan Black

Stefan Schwarze (born April 3, 1962 ) is the captain of the Polarstern . He led the ship during the MOSAiC expedition in the Arctic from 2019 to 2020.

Life

education

After graduating from high school in 1981, Schwarze completed an apprenticeship as a sailor in shipping. He then went to the shipping company Döhle in Hamburg as a nautical officer assistant .

From 1985 to 1989, Schwarze studied at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences . He finished his studies as a captain on a long voyage .

Time on the Polarstern

Since 1990, Schwarze has been part of the regular crew of the Polarstern . On this ship, he served in all officer positions and functions. Schwarze has been captain of the Polarstern since 2005 . He's been to the North Pole five times by ship . In 2008, he orbited the Arctic via the Northwest and Northeast Passages in 21 days.
