Thomas von der Vring

Thomas von der Vring (born May 27, 1937 in Stuttgart ) is a German historian , sociologist and economist . He was the founding rector of the University of Bremen and a professor there.

biography

education

Thomas von der Vring was born in Stuttgart as the son of the writer Georg von der Vring (1889–1968) and his wife Marianne geb. Kayser born. He attended elementary school from 1943 to 1948, high school from 1948 to 1957 and graduated from high school in Calw in 1957 . From 1957 to 1963 he studied history, sociology and economics in Munich and Frankfurt . In 1963 he obtained his doctorate in Frankfurt on the history of the German book printers' union. phil. During his studies he was a member of the Socialist German Student Union (SDS).

University professor

From 1963 to 1968 von der Vring worked as an assistant for political science at the Technical University of Hanover (today Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover ) with Peter von Oertzen . In 1968 he completed his habilitation at the TU Hannover with a thesis on electoral reform. From 1968 to 1970 he was a university lecturer in Hanover. From 1970 to 1974 he was the founding rector of the University of Bremen and from 1974 to 1979 he was a professor for political economy there.

From 1994 until his retirement in 2000 he worked again as a professor for political economy at the University of Bremen after his time in parliament.

politics

From 1979 to 1994 von der Vring was a member of the European Parliament for the SPD and worked there from 1979 to 1984 in the regional committee and from 1984 to 1994 in the budget committee, which he also chaired from 1989 to 1994. He has also been Chairman of the Administrative Board of Radio Bremen since 1996 .
