The Thompson River is an approximately 70 km long right tributary of the Clark Fork in the northwest of the US state Montana . The river was named after the Canadian cartographer David Thompson .
River course
The Thompson River forms the outflow of the 1,016 m high Lower Thompson Lake . It flows mainly south through Sanders County . Initially, he briefly crossed the border with Flathead County to the east . The Thompson River forms the eastern boundary of the Cabinet Mountains . In the lower reaches the river crosses the Lolo National Forest . The Thompson River finally flows 8 km east of the small town of Thompson Falls into the Clark Fork. The Montana Highway 200 crosses the river just above its mouth.
