Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe, around 1930

Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe (born November 12, 1894 in Oslo ; † June 8, 1976 in Oslo) was a Norwegian zoologist who first observed the pecking order in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and described it in his dissertation from 1921.

biography

Schjelderup-Ebbe carried out the behavior he first observed and described on his own chickens, which he had raised since he was ten years old. The dominance hierarchy he observed in chickens and other birds led him to the conclusion that within a group, a dominant animal is given the right to feed first, before lower-ranking animals get the turn. In his observations, Schjelderup-Ebbe was also able to identify exceptions in the respective hierarchy of chickens. He recognized so-called "triangles", in which the higher standing chicken A pecked the lower chicken B, B the lower C, but C, in turn, pecked chicken A. Schjelderup-Ebbe was thus able to recognize anomalies within a hierarchical arrangement that deviated from a rigid arrangement within an otherwise closed group arrangement.

Trivia

During his life, Schjelderup-Ebbe did not receive the recognition that his fundamental knowledge would have given him. To blame for these circumstances was a critical article about the first female professor in Norway, which came from an anonymous in a student magazine and denounced the said professor. Schjelderup-Ebbe was suspected to be the author of the article (it later turned out that the article was written by the well-known Norwegian writer Sigurd Hoel ). Since the professor in question was Schjelderup-Ebbe's sponsor, he was unable to continue doing his doctorate with her.
