Thorsten Uthmeier

Thorsten Uthmeier (born April 22, 1966 in Hilden ) is a German prehistoric scientist . He is a renowned expert on the Paleolithic and prehistory of Bavaria .

Scientific career

Thorsten Uthmeier grew up in Hamm ( Westphalia ). After high school , he completed a study of pre- and early history , classical archeology and sociology at the University of Cologne . After completing his master's degree in 1995, Uthmeier received the doctoral scholarship from the "Graduate Funding of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia" from 1995 to 1997. In 1998 he was with Jürgen Richter, at the University of Cologne, with his work "Micoquian, Aurignacian and Gravettian in Bavaria" doctorate . After receiving his doctorate, he worked until 1999 as an employee in the project archaeological prospection of the mining edges of the foundation for the promotion of archeology in the Rhenish lignite mining area . Thorsten Uthmeier then worked from 1999 to 2009 as a research assistant at the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory at the University of Cologne.

From 2000 to 2006, together with Jürgen Richter, he led the DFG project “Functional Variability in the Late Middle Paleolithic of the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine”. His habilitation thesis entitled “Land Use Patterns in the Middle Paleolithic of the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine: A Contribution to the Economy and Sociology of the Neanderthals”, which he submitted to Cologne University in 2005, is based on this project . In the same year Uthmeier received the price of the Offermann-Hergarten-Stiftung for the promotion of special humanistic achievements at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Cologne and at the same time took over the representation of the chair for prehistory (Jens Lüning) at the Johann-Wolfgang Goethe- University of Frankfurt am Main . Following his habilitation, he received the Venia Legendi in 2006 for the field of prehistory and early history.

In 2007 he represented the chair of the Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology and Provincial Roman Archeology (Chair Prof. V. Bierbrauer) at the Department of Cultural Studies and Classical Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

From 2009 to 2010 he worked as a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center 806 at the University of Cologne.

Thorsten Uthmeier has held a chair at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg since 2010 . Since 2011 he has also been President of the Board of Management of the Hugo Obermaier Society . Since 2013 he has been a member of the pricing group for the " Kurt Bittel Prize of the City of Heidenheim for South German Classical Studies ".
