Tigermilk is the debut album by the Scottish indie band Belle and Sebastian . It appeared in a limited edition in 1996 and was republished in 1999.

Emergence

The band's founder, Stuart Murdoch, attended a music production course at Stow College in Glasgow from 1995 to 1996 . As part of this course, the publication of a self-produced record on the school's own label Electric Honey is planned. Normally they were limited to a single , but Murdoch already had enough song material ready, the quality of which convinced the course leaders that a complete album was produced for the first time. Among the students at the college Murdoch looked for people interested in starting a band, selected ten pieces and thus created the album Tigermilk .

1000 vinyl LPs were produced, about 600 of which were distributed to friends, acquaintances and radio stations, the rest were gradually sold. Word of mouth alone spread the reputation of the band, which was designed exclusively as a college project and therefore only had a few public appearances. The unusual arrangements and imaginative lyrics on Tigermilk drew more and more fans under their spell when all records had long been sold. Over three years they managed to repeatedly transfer the album onto tape cassettes, which were brought into circulation among friends, the original LPs became rarities. The top price paid for a signed Tiger Milk LP at auction was £ 810.

In June 1999, after Belle and Sebastian had released two albums and four EPs , the London independent label Jeepster released the long-awaited new edition of Tigermilk on CD and LP in the original design. The re-release reached number 13 on the British album charts.
