If you're feeling sinister The Boy With The Arab Strap (1998)

If You're Feeling Sinister is the second studio album by the Scottish pop group Belle and Sebastian . It was released in 1996 on the indie label Jeepster Records. The album received very good reviews and is considered a classic of the indie pop genre, so it has gained a large following.

Band leader Stuart Murdoch said in interviews that this was probably his best album, although it wasn't very well received. In 2005 the band released a live version of the album called If You're Feeling Sinister: Live at the Barbican via the iTunes Store . The band did this in order to offer a better recorded version of the album.

Cover

The cover of the CD shows a red-tinted photo of a woman lying melancholy in bed. Next to her lies a copy of Franz Kafka's novel The Trial .

reception

If You're Feeling Sinister is considered to be one of the most respected albums of the 90s. Pitchfork Media placed the album at # 14 on their Top 100 list of the 1990s. The Rolling Stone magazine listed the album on their Essential Recordings of the 1990s list, while spinning the plate "100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005" aufführte at # 76 on their list.

If You're Feeling Sinister also appears as a critically-voted entry in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die . Acclaimed Music rates the album as the third best album of the 90s and 224 best album of all time.

In 2007 Scott Plagenhoef wrote a book about the album as part of the 33 ⅓ series.

The critic Joachim Henn wrote in the German intro magazine:

“Idem for the assortment of instruments from which, in addition to the accompanying guitar, they use themselves abundantly (piano and other keyboard instruments, harmonica, wind instruments, strings, flutes, noises from children playing), but in a frugal way, just so that these consistently airy maintenance sets small nuances for songs that throw a strange magic into the room that is difficult to escape. Here melodies and harmonies are reinvented with an enthusiasm and a freshness that the retrograde expression that one could hold against the whole thing is simply blown away. "
