The Adventure & Tiger Park Dassow is a seasonal zoo in Dassow in northwest Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The park, which is owned by the Farell family, now covers an area of 5  hectares . It has one of the largest tiger and lion enclosures in Europe with a total of 19 big cats , including 14 tigers and five lions. The main focus is on the threatened big cats , but the park is home to various animals.

Idea and story

idea

Even while traveling with his predators in Europe, Dieter Farell's dream was to settle down with the animals. He dreamed of a spacious, zoo-like facility for his animals and the possibility of continuing to show them to the public in training, in which the beauty and elegance of the big cats come into their own when moving. A special pre-eminence to this breeding for conservation of the endangered big cats are taking, since the natural habitat of the Tiger is getting smaller.

Beginning

The difficulty to achieve this lay in finding a suitable plot of land. The search for a suitable property began in 1992. Many properties were difficult to reach for the public simply because of their location. Others were designated as agricultural lands and could not be used for these purposes.

By chance, an area on the Baltic Sea coast in the Holmer Berg industrial park in Dassow , located directly in front of the B 105 to Wismar and 25 kilometers from Lübeck , presented itself . The project was accepted by the responsible authorities, especially the mayor of Dassow, Kerstin Weiß , campaigned for the park. The tourist offices of the nearby Baltic Sea resorts were also interested.

Park plan of the tiger park

Construction and opening

On September 29, 2000 an approximately three hectare plot of land in the outskirts was acquired. The difficult soil conditions with ground and surface water made planning difficult. The building permit came in November 2001. The two moats in particular, which offer the public a clear view of the tigers, were a challenge for the responsible authorities. A circus tent for the Join the Circus, their aptitude for the children in acrobatics , juggling can make or dealing with harmless animals demonstrated was purchased.

The Dassow Park was opened on May 29, 2003.

Attractions

Since the first year, several shows have taken place every day in the predatory school and in the interactive circus. For the Farell family it is important to offer all animals in the park something to do and to stimulate the animals physically and mentally.

Monica Farell at the Daily Predatory School

Predatory School

A daily exercise program is important for the long-term health of the big cats. This training stimulates them both physically and mentally. All exercises are adapted to the natural behavior of animals in the wild. The jumps, for example, go from one pedestal to another and thus simulate the jump. The predators sit up high in smaller scuffles, while walking on their hind legs means the highest fighting stance. Only an animal trainer, whom they recognize as an alpha animal and who has precise knowledge of the animal psyche and the behavior of these animals, can demand all these movement sequences from the animals. Only through his authority is it possible to gather predators in the smallest of spaces that would otherwise fight. Each training session is moderated so that visitors can better understand the work with the animals.

Presentation in the hands-on circus

Participating circus

In the hands-on circus the children stand as artists in the ring and can try out circus disciplines such as acrobatics, juggling, tightrope walking, trapeze and magic tricks under supervision. A show is rehearsed together, which is then presented in front of an audience. Achieving top performance in circus is not the goal and therefore the measure can be used for all children and young people. The hands-on circus is visited by schools, kindergartens and institutions for the disabled.
