Chaja & Mimi is a documentary short film by the director Eric Esser. For the most part, it consists of an interview with Chaja Florentin and Mimi Frons, two Jewish Israeli women, about their ambivalent relationship with Berlin, the city of their birth. A first version dates from 2009 , a second, completely revised version of the film for the international market was released in 2013 .

action

The two Jewish women of German origin (so-called Jeckiot ) share their childhood memories of the Mitte district of Berlin and the Scheunenviertel in which they grew up in the 1920s. They report on their flight from the National Socialists to what was then Palestine in 1934 . Chaja Florentin tells of a later painful visit to post-war Berlin. The emotional climax is the joy and enthusiasm of the two women when they see historical photographs of the streets in which they grew up. The final question, whether they would move back to Berlin, both resolutely deny, pointing out that Israel is their home. Although they are dissatisfied with a lot in Israel, it is like having a stressful baby that screams all the time and that you still love.

background

Chaja & Mimi was premiered in its first cut version on February 6, 2009 at the Directors Lounge Festival in Berlin, in the Memories section of the program , Sabrina Small reviewed the short film in the festival blog .

The revised international version had its premiere on June 22, 2013 at the Walter Benjamin Short Film Competition in Portbou, Spain .

The interviews were conducted in the Café Mersand in Tel Aviv , the regular café of the two protagonists. The café was founded in 1958 by the German immigrant Walter Mersand and has long been considered a meeting place for the so-called Jeckes in Tel Aviv.

The Anne Frank Center has been using the film in educational work since 2011, as part of the project Not put in the school cone . The learning material is aimed at primary school children aged 10 and over. Just like in the film, the focus here is on the memories of survivors of the National Socialist persecution of the Jews . The Berlin Educational Center of the Heinrich Böll Foundation also had teaching materials created for the film. The materials contain four methods on the topics of migration and anti-Semitism and can be downloaded free of charge from the Bildungswerk's website.

reception

The jury of the German Film and Media Assessment justified its judgment on the predicate Particularly valuable in the summer of 2013 by saying that the film enriched the collection of the dwindling "oral history" of the survivors of the Third Reich , because their memories were indispensable for future generations. He contributes a large and important part to erecting a worthy memorial to these interesting and fascinating women who have found their home for life in Tel Aviv. and enrich the audience with their zest for life

The competition committee of the Irish Human Rights Film Awards justified the nomination of the film by saying that the filmmaker Eric Esser used photos from prewar Berlin to give the two remarkable women an insight into their attitude towards Germany, the past and forgiveness . This is a tender and inspiring story about survival, home, identity and the strong bond of friendship.
