The Tillyschanze was built on a scenic and historically significant mountain ledge. Here the Hessian Landgrave Heinrich had the Hesseburg built at the beginning of the 14th century on the border with the Guelph city of Münden. The castle was demolished by the builder about a year later in order not to let the dispute with the city of Münden escalate. The moat that surrounds the Tillyschanze has been preserved. When the Tillyschanze was built in the 1880s, care was taken to preserve the old moat.

Building description

The round tower is a massive stone building with a spiral staircase inside. In a two-story extension there is a roof terrace and two tower rooms in which a museum on the history of the tower is set up. There is a relief by the sculptor Gustav Eberlein from Münden , which shows the siege of the city in 1626 by the troops of Tilly during the Thirty Years War . For a small fee you can climb the tower and visit the museum. In a tower room are in the summer months standesamt Liche marriages performed.

The observation tower was built by the Tower Construction Committee , a local citizens' initiative , from 1881 to 1885 with donations. The name reminds of the siege and subsequent capture of Münden by Tilly in 1626. Recent research shows that Tilly did not set up his cannons at this point, but far below on the banks of the Fulda . It is more likely that he used this point to observe the city. Because of its strategic location, the Tillyschanze area was used during the Seven Years' War by the troops of Duke Ferdinand of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel as a cannon position against French troops in 1760 and 1761 . For this purpose, a hill with a flank width of about 40 meters was set up, which was used to bombard the Franzosenschanze on the opposite Questenberg . Small remains of soil from the ski jump can still be found in the area of today's excursion restaurant at Tillyschanze.

The fact that the site was used for military purposes in earlier times was revealed by discoveries made during the excavation of the construction pit for the construction of the observation tower in 1881. In the ground were lance and arrowheads, stirrups, cannon and rifle balls as well as rifle parts that were dated as medieval to early modern .

Already at the start of construction, a license was issued for a plot of land next to the tower for catering to visitors. Around 1900 a restaurant building was built around 20 meters from the Tillyschanze, which burned down in 1936. The newly built restaurant was in operation until it was closed in 1980 due to renovation requirements. After a 15-year break in operations, a new owner took over the building in 1995 and renovated it. Events such as medieval and Christmas markets take place regularly in the vicinity of the restaurant and observation tower .

The state border between Hesse and Lower Saxony runs between the Tillyschanze and the restaurant . While the tower is in Lower Saxony, the restaurant belongs to the Reinhardswald estate in Hesse .

Oddities

According to the Hessian State Statistical Office , the manor district is uninhabited. However, two residents live in the area who run the restaurant next to the Tillyschanze. Both people are registered with the forest office in Reinhardshagen , which is responsible for administrative matters. The Hessian authorities are also responsible for other administrative matters, such as finances or catering. Since the manor district does not have a postcode , it is not delivered by post. So the two residents set up a post office box in Hann. Münden . However, a postcode is entered in your vehicle registration document, since the responsible official computer would otherwise have refused to print it: 00000. The wastewater is diverted to Lower Saxony. The responsible polling station is in Reinhardshagen, Hesse.

In December 2015 the Tillyschanze received the address Bierweg 1, 34346 Hann. Münden and has been supplied by post since then.
