Timothy J. Mitchison
Timothy John "Tim" Mitchison (* 1958 in Edinburgh ) is a British - American cell biologist and professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School .
Timothy Mitchison is the son of Avrion Mitchison , the grandson of Gilbert Mitchison, Baron Mitchison and Naomi Mitchison , a nephew of Murdoch Mitchison and great-nephew of JBS Haldane and great-grandchild of John Scott Haldane . He grew up in London and studied biochemistry at Oxford University ( bachelor's degree in 1980) and earned a Ph.D. in 1984 from Marc Kirschner at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). in biochemistry and biophysics . As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with Kirschner at UCSF and with David Trentham at the National Institute for Medical Research in London.
In 1987, Mitchison received his first professorship in pharmacology at UCSF. In 1997 he moved to Harvard University , where he and Stuart Schreiber were founders of the Institute for Chemistry and Cell Biology . Mitchison 2004 was a founding member of the Department of Systems Biology (systems biology) and 2011 (among others with Peter Sorger ) of the Initiative for System Pharmacology (systems pharmacology) at Harvard University. Here Mitchison is today (as of 2017) Deputy Head of the Department of Systems Biology and Co-Director of the doctoral program there.
Mitchison has made significant contributions to the study of the biochemistry, dynamics and spatial organization of the microtubules , the spindle apparatus and the kinetochores and their importance for the process of cell division . This is how he discovered the principle of dynamic instability of microtubules. He deals with fluorescence-assisted representation of the processes in living cells. The kinesin inhibitor Monastrol was developed in his laboratory .
Timothy Mitchison is married to the biologist Christine Field and the couple have two adopted children.
