Tim Matthys (born December 23, 1983 ) is a former Belgian football player .

Career

Matthys began his career at KSV Zottegem and moved to the first division club KAA Gent in 2004 .

In 2006 Matthys won the Belgian Cup with SV Zulte Waregem , scoring two goals in the final. In the following 2006/07 season he played with Waregem in the UEFA Cup .

In the group game of the European Cup against Austrian club FK Austria Wien , he scored three goals. His subsequent interview “In the morning I sell shoes, in the afternoon I train” was legendary, which earned him the nickname “ Al Bundy ” in Austria . He scored a total of six UEFA Cup goals in 2006/07.

After the turn of the year 2008/09 he was loaned to Panthrakikos in the second Greek league. In the 2009/10 season a loan to Lierse SK in the second Belgian division followed . At the end of the season Lierse was promoted to Division 1A . After the loan expired, Matthys should have played again in Waregem.

He agreed with the club, however, to terminate his contract and move to RAEC Mons in the second division. He signed a contract there for a year. Mons achieved promotion to Division 1A at the end of the season. Matthys was initially extended for two years and after one year until 2015.

In the 2013/14 season, the RAEC Mons was in last place at the end of the season and relegated to the second division after only one draw in the relegation games. Matthys then switched to KV Mechelen and signed a contract there for four years. After the 2017/18 season, Mechelen was the last to be relegated from Division 1A. Matthys agreed with the club to extend his contract by one year. In the 2018/19 season, Mechelen was promoted back to Division 1A and won the Belgian Cup .

Matthys thus ended his active career as a footballer and took over the position of chief scout at KV Mechelen. On October 1, 2019, he switched to the KAA Gent as a scout .
