Timm Kern

Timm Peter Kern (born February 7, 1972 in Tübingen ) is a German politician of the FDP and since April 2011 a member of the state parliament in Baden-Württemberg for the constituency of Freudenstadt .

education and profession

Timm Kern grew up in Horb am Neckar , where he passed his Abitur in 1991 after attending primary school in Horb-Rexingen and Martin-Gerbert-Gymnasium in Horb. He then completed a three-month social internship in the children's and infant ward in the Freudenstadt district hospital. He studied Catholic theology , history and political science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He then studied peace and conflict research at the American University in Washington between 1997 and 1998 . This year he also worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the German Embassy and the Society for Economic Cooperation (GWZ).

From 2005 to 2007 Kern completed his legal clerkship at the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule and at the Kepler-Gymnasium in Tübingen, which he finished with the second state examination. From 2007, Kern taught social studies, economics, history and the Catholic religion at the Friedrich-List-Gymnasium Reutlingen .

In 2007 he was in Hans-Georg Wehling Dr. rer. soc. PhD from the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen with magna cum laude . His dissertation was published under the title Why are mayors voted out? A study from Baden-Wuerttemberg over the period from 1973 to 2003. In 2009 he was appointed to the faculty.

Political activity

Timm Kern joined the Young Liberals in 1989 and the FDP in 1991. In 1993 he became a member of the Federal Church Commission of the FDP. A year later he was elected to the local council of Horb, to which he was a member until 2002, and from 1999 to 2002 he was also a member of the Freudenstadt district council . He ran in the European elections in 1994 . In 1994 and 1995, Kern was deputy state chairman of the Young Liberals in Baden-Württemberg and in this position was responsible for press and public relations. From 1995 to 2002 he was parliamentary group leader of the Free Democrats / Free Voters in the Horb local council. In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1996 , Kern ran and achieved a result of 11.5%, which was not enough for entry into the state parliament. Since 1996 he has been a member of the regional board of the Association of Liberal Local Politicians (VLK). In the state elections in 2011 , he achieved 7.6% in the Freudenstadt constituency and thus entered the state parliament. Timm Kern is a member of the state parliament committee "Kultus, Jugend und Sport". In July 2013 he took over from Friedrich Bullinger as Parliamentary Managing Director and Deputy Group Chairman. He is also a spokesman for culture, youth and sport; Churches and religious communities. In the state elections on March 13, 2016 , Timm Kern was re-elected in the Freudenstadt constituency. He achieved 13.46% of the vote and thus the best result of all FDP candidates in Baden-Württemberg (national average: 8.3%). Since April 2016 he has also been a member of the committee for "Internal Affairs, Digitization and Migration", as well as the Presidium of the state parliament. He is the spokesman for digitization within the FDP / DVP parliamentary group. Due to a burn-out , Kern resigned from the position of FDP district chairman Freudenstadt , which he had held since November 2012, in January 2019 .

Family and private

Timm Kern was born as the first child of Herbert and Jutta Kern, geb. Neuhaus, born in Tübingen. He has a brother. Kern has been married since 2000, has two children and is a Roman Catholic. He is a member of the theological association AV Albertus Magnus Tübingen.
