Timo Steiner

Timo Steiner (born May 6, 1976 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian composer .

Life

Timo Steiner graduated from the Tallinn Music High School ( Tallinna Muusikakeskkool ) in 1994 with a degree in composition . His teachers were René Eespere , Toomas Trass and Mati Kuulberg .

Steiner then studied at the Estonian Music Academy until 2001 , among others with Jaan Rääts and Raimo Kangro . He attended master classes with Marek Stachowski in Rostock and Roman Ledenjow at the Moscow Conservatory .

In 1999 Steiner joined the Estonian Composers' Association ( Eesti Heliloojate Liit ). His best-known compositions include the short opera Kosjas (2003), the piece send / receive / resound for symphony orchestra (together with Ülo Krigul and Mariliis Valkonen , 2009), the counter performance tantsivale flöödile (2007) and the cello concerto The Rest of Life (2001) . With his work Minotauruse päevaraamat for four guitars Steiner won the 1998 Estonian Music Days competition. At the Nargen Festival in June 2011, his opera “Zwei Köpf” based on a libretto by Maarja Kangro was premiered.

Steiner has been the director of the Tallinn Music High School since autumn 2005. He has organized numerous contemporary music festivals in Estonia. Together with Ülo Krigul he started the annual autumn festival of the Estonian Academy of Music in 1999.

Awards

In 2002 Steiner was awarded the Heino Eller Music Prize. In 2006 he received the annual prize of the state cultural foundation Eesti Kultuurkapital .
