TR Seshadri

TR Seshadri ( Thiruvenkata Rajendra Seshadri ; born February 2, 1900 in Kulitalai , Tiruchirappalli district , † September 27, 1975 in New Delhi ) was an Indian chemist .

Life

He was the son of a teacher and studied from 1917 at Presidency College in Madras , was a brief teacher after graduation and then again in the chemistry department at Presidency College. From 1927 he was at the University of Manchester with Robert Robinson . He followed this to University College London , where he received his doctorate in 1929 . As a post-doctoral student he was with Fritz Pregl in Graz and with George Barger in Edinburgh. In 1930 he was back in Madras and went to the Agricultural Research Institute in Coimbatore, where he analyzed soils. From 1933 he was at Andhra University in Waltair , where he became a professor of chemistry in 1937 and built a department for pharmacy. From 1949 until his retirement in 1965 he was head of the chemistry faculty at the University of Delhi . After his retirement he concentrated on research.

He researched active ingredients in Indian medicinal plants and natural plants, isolation, structure elucidation as well as synthesis and determination of the effectiveness as medicament, insecticide or in other applications.

Honors

In 1960 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1961 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1963 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan .
