Data on the structure

The Tischrin Dam ( Arabic سد تشرين, DMG Sadd Tišrīn ) is located on the Euphrates in northern Syria about 90 km east of Aleppo . Qalʿat Nadschm Castle is located on its bank . The dam was flooded in 1999. Neolithic traces of settlement were secured beforehand.

In the course of the Syrian civil war , the dam was taken first in November 2012 by the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA) and on May 14, 2014 by troops of the terrorist Islamic State (IS). Around Christmas 2015 it was captured by units of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). An attempt at recapture by IS in January 2016 failed.

The road leading over the dam was considered to be an important supply link for IS between their core areas around ar-Raqqa on the one hand and Manbij and the Turkish-Syrian border crossing at Jarabulus on the other.

As a result of the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria in 2019 , the Tischrin Dam was taken over by the Syrian army .
