Tobias Eckhard

Tobias Eckhard (born November 1, 1662 in Jüterbog ; † December 13, 1737 in Quedlinburg ) was a German Protestant theologian and teacher.

Life

Tobias Eckhard was born the son of a riding officer. He attended grammar school in Halle and enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in 1682 . After attaining a master's degree in 1686 , he was accepted as an adjunct in the philosophical faculty in 1689 . During his lecture period he turned to the study of Protestant theology, which he completed with the academic degree of licentiate . In 1691 he went to the Gymnasium ( Athenaeum ) in Stade as vice rector and in 1693 became its rector . In 1704 he went to Quedlinburg as rector.

Eckhard was recognized as a scholar in his time, whose knowledge was mostly reflected in small and now lost writings. He dealt with polyhistory and developed a great interest in languages, especially French, Italian and Hebrew.

His son was the lawyer Christian Heinrich Eckhard .
