Toboggan in the Wurstelprater in Vienna

The Toboggan , formerly called Teufels Rutsch , is a ride in the Wurstelprater in Vienna . The toboggan is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The toboggan was built on the model of other slide towers in major European cities and opened in 1913 under the name Teufels Rutsch . The first owner was the Russian showman Nikolai Kobelkoff . In the meantime there were also other slide towers in the Prater, but only the Devil's Slide survived the coming and going of similar attractions. During the Second World War ( Vienna Operation ) the wooden tower burned down completely. It was rebuilt from 1946 based on old plans.

In 2000 the 25 meter high slide tower was finally taken out of service due to construction defects. The toboggan was completely refurbished from autumn 2008 to the beginning of 2009, the total cost of 350,000 euros was partly borne by the Vienna Cultural Office, the Federal Monuments Office and private sponsors. At the beginning of the Prater season in March 2009 it was reopened.

Trivia

An urban legend has also grown up around the toboggan since the 1950s . At that time, a fragment of a plank is said to have come loose, as a result of which a woman who was sliding down was literally impaled and succumbed to her serious injuries. There was indeed an accident in which a woman picked up a splinter of wood, but she was able to leave the hospital on the same day. Ernst Molden , Willi Resetarits , Walther Soyka and Hannes Wirth addressed the ultimately not taken seriously warning of a mother about the attraction in their song Rudschduam (' Slide Tower ').
