Togiak is a traditional Yupik site in the Dillingham Census Area in Alaska . According to the 2000 census , 809 people lived there. Togiak is located on Togiak Bay near the mouth of the Togiak River in the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge and is the starting point for the Walrus Island Game Sanctuary .
history
In 1880 "Old Togiak" or "Togiagamute" was on the other side of the bay and had a population of 276. Heavy winter snowfalls made it difficult to collect wood in Old Togiak, and so people gradually moved to the other bank, where it was easier was. After the devastating flu epidemic in 1918/19, many residents of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region moved to Togiak. In 1950 a school was set up in an old church, and a school building was built in 1959.

Togiak can be reached by regular and charter flights from Dillingham . The state airport Togiak Airport (IATA code TOG) has four runways of 1341 m, 1286 m, 366 m and 332 m in length. Small boats, cars, quads, and snowmobiles are common local modes of transportation.
