Tokyo Jihen ( Japanese 東京 事 変 ), also known by the English name Tokyo Incidents , is a Japanese band formed by the Japanese singer Ringo Shiina in 2003.

prehistory

In 2003, Ringo Shiina formed a support band for her farewell tour because she wanted to end her solo career. Following this tour, she decided to continue working with the musicians from Tokyo Jihen and therefore joined this band.

Band history

On May 31, 2004, the musicians from Tokyo Jihen announced that they wanted to work as a permanent band. Tokyo Jihen released an album and two singles and went on a tour . On July 1, 2005, the band members HZM and Mikio Hirama (solo career) announced during this concert tour that they wanted to leave Tokyo Jihen. At the end of 2005, Izawa Ichiyou instead of HZM and Ukigumo (who had already worked with Shiina Ringo on her last solo album) instead of Hirama Mikio were added.

The change in membership had a noticeable impact on the music of Tokyo Jihen. While the first album Kyoiku still contained rock with light jazz influences, the second album Otona with a new line-up completely followed the path of jazz rock .

When there were rumors that Tokyo Jihen would break up due to Shiina Ringo's solo projects, two new singles were announced for July and August 2007: OSCA and Killer Tune . The band has also announced a tour of Japan in late autumn. At the end of September 2007 her new album Variety was released , which - according to Shiina Ringo - unlike its two predecessors, sees itself more as a pop album than a rock or jazz record.
