description

On June 14, 1731, it was decided to build a new Tolbooth to replace the previous structure. The building was built in 1735 to a design by William Adam and redesigned in 1857. Stone material from Sanquhar Castle may have been reused for its construction .

The Tolbooth is on High Street ( A76 ) in central Sanquhar. The east-facing front of the two-story baroque building is five axes wide. The slightly protruding, three axis wide central projection closes with a triangular gable with an oculus in the tympanum . Above it sits an octagonal bell tower with a curved hood and a weather vane . Two staircases with cast iron railings lead parallel to the facade to the central entrance portal on the first floor. This part of the building was not built in this form until 1857. While ashlar stones were built into layered masonry along the east facade , the rest of the masonry consists of rubble stone . The building closes with a slate hipped roof .
