Tom Greatrex (born September 30, 1974 in Ashford ) is a British politician .

Life

Greatrex was born in Ashford, Kent, England in 1974 . He attended Judd School in Tonbridge and then moved to the London School of Economics and Political Science , where he studied economics, politics and law. Greatrex subsequently worked for a trade union in London and then moved to a senior position in the government of East Dunbartonshire . Most recently he worked for the NHS until 2007 . Greatrex is married and has twins. He lives in Cambuslang , South Lanarkshire .

Political career

As a member of the Co-operative Party and the Labor Party , Greatrex was part of Chief Whip Donald Dewar's team in the run-up to the 1997 general election . He was then employed as a consultant to Nick Brown . Between 2007 and 2010, Greatrex served as political advisor to Secretary of State Douglas Alexander , Des Browne and Jim Murphy .

After Thomas McAvoy , who won the election of the constituency of Rutherglen and Hamilton West for the Labor Party in the 2005 general election, announced that he would not run for another term in the run-up to the 2010 general election, Greatrex was appointed as his successor. On election day, Greatrex received 60.8% of the vote and thus moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . Following the election, Greatrex served in the Labor Party's shadow cabinet, initially as a secretary in the Scotland Ministry, and then from 2011 in the Ministry of Energy. After massive voting losses in the general election in 2015 , Greatrex left the House of Commons. The mandate went to the SNP candidate Margaret Ferrier .
