Tom Whittaker (* 9. June 1948 in Wales as Thomas Granville Whittaker ) is a British - American climbers . He was the first leg amputated man on the Mount Everest .

Life

The son of a Welsh officer moved to the United States in 1976 and was climbing before he lost his right foot in a car accident in 1979 . After overcoming the subsequent depression , he began kayaking and went back to climbing . In 1981 he founded the Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CWHOG) in Pocatello ( Idaho ) to get disabled people interested in nature sports . As a naturalized US-American (1986) he made attempts to climb Mount Everest in 1989 and 1995, which he finally succeeded in the third attempt on May 27, 1998.

About his performance informs documentary Footprint on Everest and his book Higher purpose (German: Flying high ). In November 2006 he became a Member of the Order of the British Empire . Whittaker earned two masters degrees from Idaho State University and works as a motivational speaker .

Whittaker and his wife Cindy have two daughters.
