Tommi Tiilikainen

Tommi Tiilikainen (born June 2, 1987 in Porvoo ) is a Finnish volleyball coach and former player. He won the championship three times and the cup three times in his home country. In the 2016/17 season he trained the SWD Powervolleys Düren .

Career

As a player

Tiilikainen first tried out various activities. In addition to tennis and gymnastics , this also included ballet . Because of his father, who was a player and coach himself, he decided to play volleyball. He played in the Finnish junior national team before making it to the top division in 2006. He was also active as a beach volleyball player. Due to persistent back pain , however, he had to end his career early.

As a trainer

After retiring as a player, Tiilikainen became a coach. First he worked in Kuortane in the 2011/12 season . At the same time, he worked as an assistant coach for the junior national team. In 2012 he became the head coach of the Kokkola Tiikerit and one of the youngest coaches in Finnish volleyball. In the very first season he won the Finnish championship with the team. In the 2013/14 season Kokkola took part in the European Cup. In the first round of the CEV Cup, the Finns lost to the Serbian representative MOK Đerdap Kladovo in the golden set; in the Challenge Cup came after a success against Mladost Brčko the end against Nantes also in the decisive set. At the national level, Kokkola was runner-up and cup winner again. In the 2014/15 European Cup, Tiilikainen's team had to admit defeat after one round in the CEV Cup and Challenge Cup against Kędzierzyn-Koźle and Minsk . Then she secured the double again with the next title win in the Finnish league and successfully defending the title in the cup. In the third participation in the CEV Cup the following season made it into the round of 16 for the first time, which Kokkola lost to the eventual finalist ZSK Gazprom-Ugra Surgut . In the national cup, Tiilikainen and his team won the final for the third time in a row. In the league, the team lost only one game and thus successfully defended the championship title. Subsequently, Tiilikainen was signed by the German Bundesliga club SWD Powervolleys Düren as the new head coach for the 2016/17 season. According to his own information, the Finn, who was mediated by former Bundesliga player Nisse Huttunen , knew Düren before through international games and discussions with his predecessor Anton Brams . On January 24, 2017, the SWD Powervolleys first announced that they had extended the contract with Tiilikainen to 2019. With the Finn, the club reached the semi-finals of the Bundesliga playoffs 2016/17 . At the beginning of May, however, Düren announced the departure of the coach, who was moving to Japan .

Tommi Tiilikainen's younger sister Riikka Tiilikainen was also a professional volleyball player. She played in the national team and for the Bundesliga club VT Aurubis Hamburg .
