The Global Ethic Institute in Tübingen ( FAR , even English. Global Ethic Institute ) is an affiliated institute of the University of Tuebingen , which deals in particular with issues of economic and business ethics. It was launched in 2011 by the Global Ethic Foundation, the Karl Schlecht Foundation and the University of Tübingen. The aim of the institute's work is the further development of the global ethic idea for business and civil society through research, teaching and practical transfer.

Emergence

The background for the establishment of the WEIT is the Global Ethic project of the Swiss theologian Hans Küng . Küng assumes that all world religions are based on a common global ethic . In concrete terms, this global ethic can be broken down into the principles of the Golden Rule and humanism as well as four formulas: non-violence and awe above all life, solidarity and justice, tolerance and truthfulness, as well as equality and partnership between men and women.

The Global Ethic Foundation in Tübingen has existed since 1996 to promote and spread this idea . This was founded shortly before Kiing's retirement at the university there with capital from the founder Karl Konrad von der Groeben . In 2009 the Global Ethic Foundation developed the Global Business Ethic Manifesto together with decision-makers from politics and business . In 2011, a new foundation by the southern German entrepreneur Karl Schlecht enabled the establishment of a global ethic institute with a focus on intercultural issues of globalization and business ethics. Through the Karl Schlecht Foundation , which he set up, he guaranteed the basic funding for the institute to be founded. This led to the establishment of WEIT in cooperation between the Global Ethic Foundation and the University of Tübingen in April 2012. Professor Claus Dierksmeier from Boston was appointed director of the newly established institute . Ulrich Hemel has been the Director of the Global Ethic Institute since June 2018 .

research

The research focus is on the scientific foundation of an economic and globalization ethos. It also has a professorship for global business ethics.

Specifically, the Global Ethic Institute conducts basic research both for the ethics of globalization and in the area of establishing values in business. An interdisciplinary approach is explicitly pursued, incorporating the results of various humanities and social sciences.

Teaching

In cooperation with internal and external lecturers, the institute regularly offers courses on ethics and economics as well as globalization issues at the University of Tübingen. Around twelve seminars are offered per semester. In some cases, the institute is also active in educational institutions outside the university.

Act

In addition to research, practice transfer is a central cornerstone of the institute's work. Among other things, WEIT is a member of the UN initiative Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) as part of the Global Compact , the Society for Sustainability eV (GfN), the Network Plural Economics and the Humanistic Management Network . It organizes and participates regularly in symposia and workshops with entrepreneurs and scientists from the field of business ethics. On its premises it organizes various events, such as the biannual series Klüger Wirtschaften , in which Max Otte , Sahra Wagenknecht , Viktor Vanberg , Joachim Starbatty , Karlheinz Brodbeck, Birger Priddat , Franz Alt , Heiner Geißler and Christian Felber, among others , are already doing were guests. It also hosts exhibitions at irregular intervals and offers a coordination platform for local student initiatives, the so-called World Citizen School .
