Toni Florence Mau (born September 2, 1917 in Berlin-Reinickendorf ; † November 22, 1981 in Berlin) was a German painter , graphic artist and university teacher .

Life

Toni Mau studied from 1934 to 1939 and 1941 to 1943 at the Berlin-Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts , where Hans Orlowski and Max Kaus were among their teachers . After completing her studies, she initially worked as a freelance artist and as a drawing teacher. In 1946 she continued her studies at the Berlin School of Applied Arts with Max Kaus and worked freelance again from 1948 to 1953.

In 1953 Toni Mau was appointed professor at the University of Fine and Applied Arts , where she quickly came under fire in the context of the formalism debate and finally had to give up her job. Therefore, she continued her freelance work in 1957. Very early on she was interested in screen printing , a technique that was hardly noticed at the time.

Several of her works were represented at the art exhibitions of the GDR and the graphic triennial intergrafik .

Quote

“The artist's sensitivity registers tensions of our conflict-ridden times and their influence on our emotional lives and behavior. It is precisely these tensions that resonate in her works; for the anthropomorphic animal and plant structures that emerge on their graphic sheets and in the miniatures of idiosyncratic life are visually designed metaphors of these problems. On the scene of the unlimited space of a dream landscape, figures appear, sometimes similar to mythical creatures, performing symbolic gestures in the manner of medieval mystery games. The expressive dynamics of the composition allow us to participate in the action, the meaning of which we can guess. ”Ewa Garztecka, 1974
