Tonnie de Graaf was born in 1926 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. After the early death of his father, his mother moved with her two sons to Stadtoldendorf near Holzminden in 1937 . At the age of just 17, Tonnie de Graaf was drafted into the war in 1944.

Then de Graaf studied composition and piano in Braunschweig with Werner Oehlmann and Siegfried Schulze .

Many of the works by the young Tonnie de Graaf have unfortunately fallen victim to inexorable self-censorship.

His catalog raisonné includes an orchestral suite, twelve piano sonatas, numerous piano pieces and many songs for voice and piano based on texts by Georg Trakl , Ilse Aichinger , Ingeborg Bachmann , Carl Zuckmayer and Heinrich Böll .

“What I particularly like about your music is the principle of thrift. Little effort, deep impact. That's what it's all about ... ” - this is how the poet Manfred Hausmann judged de Graaf, who set Hausmann's “ Pearl Curtain ” to music for speaker and piano.

Tonnie de Graaf was represented in over 60 radio programs.

From 1946 on he gave music lessons. After a long and serious illness, Tonnie de Graaf died on February 20, 1996.
