Antonio Pietro "Tony" Ally , b. Ali (born August 17, 1973 in Luton ) is a former British diver . He started for the City of Sheffield Diving Club in the disciplines of 3-meter jumping and with Mark Shipman in 3-meter synchronized jumping . Ally became the first British European diving champion in 1999 and took part in three Olympic Games .
Ally's first Olympics was in Atlanta in 1996 . From the 3-meter board he reached 18th place in the semifinals. In 2000 in Sydney he reached the final from the 3-meter board and was twelfth, in the newly introduced synchronized jumping he was seventh with Shipman. In 2004 in Athens he reached 15th place in the singles from the 3-meter board in the semifinals and was fifth with Shipman in the synchronized competition.
Ally achieved his greatest sporting success at the 1999 European Championships in Istanbul . He became European champion from the 3-meter board and was the first Briton to win a gold medal at European championships . With Shipman he also won bronze in synchronized jumping. He won three other medals at the Commonwealth Games , in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur bronze from the 3-meter board, in 2002 in Manchester in the same competition silver and in 2006 in Melbourne again silver, this time with Shipman in the 3-meter synchronized jumping. The best placement at a world championship reached Ally 2001 in Fukuoka . He finished fourth with Shipman in the 3-meter synchronized jumping and eighth in the individual from the 3-meter board.
Ally won his first national title at the age of twelve. In 1998 he suffered serious injuries to his right arm in a motorcycle accident and had to take a break from competition for almost a year.
He ended his diving career in 2006 and then pursued a career as a professional boxer .
