Tony Schwartz (born May 2, 1952 ) is an American journalist . On behalf of the later US President Donald Trump , he wrote the book Trump: The Art of the Deal from 1985 to 1987 as a ghostwriter .

Life

Tony Schwartz is a son of the medical doctor Irving Schwartz and the activist Felice Schwartz . He studied American Studies at the University of Michigan and graduated in 1974. Schwartz was a columnist for the New York Post , an editor at Newsweek , a reporter for The New York Times, and an editor for New York and Esquire magazines .

From 1985 he worked for the entrepreneur Donald Trump and wrote, without his intervention, the book Trump: The Art of the Deal, for which Trump and Schwartz are named as authors. It was published in November 1987. Schwartz spent a year and a half in Trump's immediate vicinity to research the book. The book was number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list for thirteen weeks and was listed there for 48 weeks. The publisher Random House paid 500,000 USD for the manuscript, who shared the two authors. The royalties were also shared by Trump and Schwartz. According to Politifact , about a million copies had been sold by 2015, before Trump announced a presidential nomination.

Schwartz later distanced himself from Trump and his political and social views and, from his knowledge, assesses Trump as problematic and unsuitable for the office of president. On October 31, 2016, eight days before the presidential election , Schwartz gave the BBC an interview in which he said that in a way he had created a version of Donald Trump that paints a picture that is far too positive ( “I created a version of Donald Trump that is far more appealing than he actually is. " ). Trump is a " sociopath " who does not care whether the statements he makes are true or false. Schwartz was particularly irritated by the fact that Trump had announced his candidacy in July 2015 with the words "We need a leader that wrote The Art of the Deal " - although he, Schwartz, had written every single word of this book. If Trump is elected president, which he doesn't believe, he will certainly leave the United States with his family.

Schwartz wrote the book What Really Matters: Searching for Wisdom in America in 1995 and in 1998, together with Michael Eisner , the then CEO of The Walt Disney Company , his book Work in Progress. He has published several books on management topics and essays in the Harvard Business Review .
