After he had finished his biathlon career, he switched to cross-country skiing, where he could not achieve much success except for a few victories in smaller national races. In 2008 he retired from competitive sports to devote himself to his medical studies. In January 2009, however, he celebrated a comeback in skiing when he became Norwegian champion in the winter triathlon and a month later even world champion in this sport. Bjørnstad is making history of having been successful in three sports in modern times. He became Norwegian champion in all disciplines and competed internationally for Norway.
In the summer of 2009 the good cyclist Bjørnstad won the Norwegian championship on the marathon route with the mountain bike and was therefore allowed to take part in the World Championships. There he landed severely in the great field.
In February 2010 he became vice world champion in the winter triathlon after his success from the previous year.
