Torghai (area)
The Torghai Oblast ( Kazakh Торғай облысы , Torghai oblyssy ; Russian Тургайская область , Turgaiskaja oblast , Turgai Oblast ) was an administrative unit of the Republic of Kazakhstan and previously as Turgai Oblast of the Kazakh SSR of the Soviet Union .
history
In the area in northwest Kazakhstan, which is crossed by the rivers Ishim and Turgai , a Turgai Oblast had already existed in the Russian Empire from 1868 , which also existed in the early years of Soviet Russia until 1920, when it was dissolved in the Orenburg governorate . This first Turgai Oblast was more than four times the size of the later one and extended significantly further north (to the north of Qostanai ), west (to the west of Aktobe ) and south.
The last existing Turgai Oblast was created on November 23, 1970 by spinning off several southern and eastern Rajons of the Kustanai Oblast (now the Qostanai region ) and the western Rajons of the Zelinograd Oblast (now the Aqmola region ). The administrative center became the city of Arqalyq .
On June 2, 1988, the oblast was dissolved and its Rajons reassigned to the neighboring areas, but restored in August 1990. Since its independence in late 1991, the area belonged to Kazakhstan and existed until 1997, when its territory was again divided between the Qostanai and Aqmola areas as part of an administrative reform.
structure
The 111,900 km² area of Torghai had almost 300,000 inhabitants in 1989 (corresponding to a population density of 2.6 inhabitants per km²), was divided into nine Rajons and the administrative center of Arqalyq as a directly subordinate, rajon-free city:
