Torphichen ( Gaelic : Tòrr Fhèichin, also Tòrr Fhitheachan) is a village in the northwest of the Scottish Council Area West Lothian or in the traditional county of Linlithgowshire . It is located about seven kilometers southeast of Grangemouth and ten kilometers northwest of Livingston . To the northeast rises the small chain of Torphichen Hills .
history
The name comes from Gaelic or Britannic and can possibly be translated as "Fechin's hill".
The Scottish King David I left the lands to the Order of Malta in the 12th century. In the same century, construction began on the Torphichen Preceptory , the Order of Malta's only commander in Scotland. At most, fragments of the buildings are still preserved today, which reflect the dimensions of the once extensive complex.
In the past, limestone and sandstone were mined in the vicinity of Torphichen . Iron and silver ores can also be found, but they are not mineable.
In the 19th century, more than 350 people lived in Torphichen. The population increased in the second half of the 20th century. As part of the 2011 census survey, 575 inhabitants were counted.
traffic
The B792 is Torphichen's main thoroughfare. With the M8 and M9 , two motorways can be reached within five kilometers. Furthermore, the A89 ( Glasgow - Newgate ), the A706 , the A800 and the A801 run in the same radius . The Edinburgh Airport located 16 kilometers to the east.
