The Torrente Gros is a torrent that does not always carry water and with a length of around 25 kilometers it is the longest and most delicate river bed on the Balearic island of Mallorca . The Torrente runs through three landscape zones in Mallorca, the Serra de Tramuntana , the Pla de Mallorca and the southern part of Raiguer .

course

The Torrente Gros consists of two main sources with tributaries that start in the Serra de Tramuntana , a double in the Esporles and Valldemossa area in the Sierra del Teix and another on the left near Bunyola in the Sierra de Alfibia. The three tributaries join in the area of Son Sardina. From there, the further course is relatively flat and slightly curved, especially due to the slight gradient between this area and its mouth near Ciudad Jardín beach in Palma, about 5 km east of the cathedral , where the torrent flows into the Mediterranean . The difference in height between the highest point and the drain is around 900 meters.

On this last section with a width of 10 meters the Torrente Gros forms the border between the municipalities of Marratxí and the urban area of Palma . Its only real tributary on the way to Palma is the Torrent de Coanegra , which , coming from the mountain village of Orient , flows into the Torrente Gros at the height of Pont d'Inca .

The torrent, which is dry for most of the year, can lead to mean flow speeds of 20 m³ per second with a time delay in the Serra de Tramuntana when there is heavy rainfall. With particularly heavy rainfall in the entire catchment area of the four tributaries, currents of more than 200 m³ per second can occur and flood the lower lying areas. However, the flood in the estuary does not occur until one or more days later because the higher rainfall mostly falls in the mountains. In the upper part, the Torrente has a depth of up to 5 meters.

fauna and Flora

Because of the temporal discontinuity of the current, there are no known species of macrofauna and also no fish, amphibians or reptiles in the river bed. There is also no significant vegetation in the course of the torrent due to the long dry seasons in this area.

Flood

The Torrente Gros is one of the most delicate in Mallorca. After the floods in December 2009 and June 2010, around 600,000 euros were invested in emergency measures in the area of the mouth of the Torrent de Coanegra near Pont d'Inca. For the "restoration of normality to the torrents", the Ministry of the Environment expects costs of up to 30 million euros in the following years.
