Toubacouta is a Senegalese rural community (Communauté rurale) in the Fatick region in Sine-Saloum . It unites the main town with a number of neighboring villages on an area estimated at over 400 km². Toubacouta is the seat of an arrondissement in the Foundiougne department .

geography

Toubacouta is about 40 kilometers south of Foundiougne , between Sokone and Karang Poste on the border with Gambia . The closest places are Bani, Soukouta, Sangako, Tabanding, Keur Aliou Gueye and Sourou. The place is on the edge of the Bandiala , a tributary of the Saloum , which flows into the Atlantic Ocean nearby.

history

In December 1887, the city was the scene of the Battle of Toubacouta . Mamadou Lamine Dramé , a marabout of the Soninke people , was defeated here with his armed forces by the French colonial troops and he himself was killed.

population

The village has about 3000 inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in agriculture.

economy

Tourism is slowly gaining momentum thanks to the opportunities for fishing in the bolongs, as well as hunting and viewing animals in the nearby Delta du Saloum National Park . The place also produces mangrove honey.
